Ice, Iron, and Ambition: Three Battles That Shook The Hidden Lair
The tables were frozen, the ruins were cracked, and the dice were merciless. This week at The Hidden Lair, three separate Warhammer 40,000 battles tore across our tables — each one a different flavor of chaos, loyalty, and ancient horror. Whether you're a veteran general or just curious what a Thursday at the shop actually looks like, here's your front-row seat to the carnage.
Battle One: Renegade Space Marines vs. Space Wolves Successors

Snow-choked ruins and frost-bitten rubble set the stage for this one — a warzone where the ice itself seemed to be holding its breath. On one flank, a warband of Renegade Space Marines advanced behind a wall of gold and crimson, their heraldry a defiant scream against the Imperium they once served. Opposing them: the disciplined, wolf-blooded successors of a proud Chapter, pushing forward through shattered chapels and gutted towers with the kind of grim patience only ice-world warriors can manage.
This was a fight for the ruins themselves — line of sight, chokepoints, and every scrap of cover on a board littered with collapsed cathedrals and rusted red containers. Renegade jump troops tried to seize the high ground early, while the successor Chapter ground forward methodically, daring the traitors to overextend. Every game night at The Hidden Lair has a story like this one — it's why we keep building tables people actually want to fight on.
Battle Two: Chaos Space Marines vs. Adeptus Custodes

Few armies command a table like the golden bulwark of the Emperor's own. This battle pitted a warband of dark, ritual-scarred Chaos Space Marines against the towering, gleaming host of the Custodes — warriors who trade in inevitability rather than tactics. The traitors leaned into the things Custodes armies hate most: numbers, chip damage, and objective pressure, funneling bodies through the ruined streets to force trades their golden opponents couldn't easily refuse.
It's the kind of matchup that draws a crowd around the table — elite killers versus attrition and heresy — and this one lived up to the hype, with the fight swinging through the mid-board ruins until the final turns decided who actually held the ground that mattered.
Battle Three: Necrons vs. Chaos Space Marines

The last battle of the day brought something older than either side wanted to admit. A tide of ancient constructs — chittering, bronze-plated, and utterly indifferent to fear — rose against a Chaos Space Marine warband dug into a grey industrial ruin. Necron swarms poured across open ground while Chaos armor and infantry tried to turn the ruins into a killzone, trading position for firepower street by street.
There's something uniquely unsettling about watching a Necron army advance — no warcries, no hesitation, just relentless, mechanical inevitability. Combined with the density of terrain on this board (shoutout to whoever keeps building these ruin stacks), it made for one of the tensest games we've run in a while.

All three of these battles happened on a single game day, which tells you everything about what walking into The Hidden Lair on any given day is like — painted armies, contested tables, and a community that shows up to play. If you're local and haven't pulled up a chair yet, our tables (and our terrain collection) are always ready for one more army.
